Most established swimwear brands already have a preferred training fabric. The question usually appears only when that route begins to expose a limitation.
The suit lasts, but swimmers describe the hand feel as too firm. Compression is strong, but fit complaints increase in younger age groups. The first order performs well, yet a reorder no longer feels quite the same. Or a fabric that works for premium training is simply too expensive for a large swim-school program.
At that point, buyers often compare PBT with a high-compression LYCRA® fabric as if one must be the better material.
That is the wrong question.

PBT and High-Compression Fabric Solve Different Problems
SABOLAY's 175gsm PBT route uses 53% polyester and 47% PBT without conventional elastane. It is developed for swim schools, clubs, team programs and frequent pool training where chlorine exposure and dimensional stability are major concerns.
Its value is not that it feels like a conventional fashion-swim fabric. It does not. PBT has its own stretch character and a firmer, more mechanical recovery. The pattern must respect that behavior rather than forcing it to imitate an elastane-rich fabric.
Our 280gsm route uses 70% polyester and 30% LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™. Its dense structure provides stronger body hold, higher coverage and a more compressed training fit. That can be valuable for performance-focused collections, but the extra power must be managed through negative ease, strap length, elastic ratios and size grading.
A heavier and more powerful fabric is not automatically more professional. If the target swimmer needs long-session comfort or easier dressing, excessive compression can become a product problem rather than a benefit.
How the Choice Changes the Product
Chlorine Exposure and Wearing Frequency
For swim schools and team programs used several times per week, PBT is often the more practical starting point. The absence of conventional elastane reduces one common vulnerability in heavily chlorinated use, but the complete garment still depends on suitable lining, elastic, thread, color and care.
For premium training collections that need compression and high coverage as well as chlorine resistance, the 280gsm LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™ route may be more appropriate.
Compression and Fit Expectations
PBT provides secure training performance, but it should not be described as the same type of compression as a dense elastane fabric. The 280gsm route can create stronger body support, yet requires more careful fit control. A paper pattern developed for 175gsm PBT cannot simply be transferred to 280gsm fabric.
Swimmer Age and Product Positioning
Youth programs often need durability, coverage and freedom of movement before aggressive compression. Adult performance training may accept a firmer entry fit in exchange for stronger support. The fabric decision should therefore follow the swimmer profile, not only a technical data sheet.
Reorders and Program Consistency
Large team programs depend on repeatability. Fabric lot, usable width, stretch and recovery still need to be checked, regardless of the route chosen. A material known for durability can still produce an inconsistent garment if the pattern and production controls drift.
A Practical Selection Framework
Before choosing between PBT and high-compression LYCRA® fabric, define five conditions:
· How often will the swimsuit be used in chlorinated water?
· Is the desired fit comfortable training support or firm compression?
· Is the product intended for children, swim schools, teams or performance-focused adults?
· How important are wet-state coverage and a smooth surface appearance?
· Does the commercial target support the material and construction cost?
These questions normally reveal the correct route more clearly than a generic comparison of weight and composition.
